«. A London cable states that Sir John Eldon Bankes succeeds the late Sir William Kennedy as Lord of Appeal, The Canterbury A. and P. Association has set aside £IOO to provide a memorial to the late Mr M, Murphy, who for many years was its secretary. Mr G, S. Barker, of Hamilton, celebrated his 99fh birthday on Monday. He is Hamilton's oldest resident and retains his faculties to a remarkable degree, in spite of his weight of advanced years. Mr. Paul Verchaffelt has been appointed secretary of the Public Service Commissioners vice Mr. A. J. H. Beage, who has been transferred as chief clerk of the inspection branch of the Education Department.—Wellington telegram. Captain Richardson, the group officer in Hawera, is an inmate of a private hospital. Ho underwent an operation this week, and is now making an excellent recovery. A Sydney cablegram states that Mr. Coghlan has been reappointed New South Wales Agent-General. The period lias not yet been decided upon. Lan W. B. Roy, son of Mr. J. B. Roy, of New Plymouth, who is a pupil at the Waitak'i Boys' High School, Oamaru, in addition (o passing the recent matriculation examination completely passed, with two others at the same school, the solicitors' and.medical preliminary examinations.
