Dining the early morning matches the htwii3 were ntlm di id owm„ to tin hciw rain of a few hours previous, but as the day wore on they quickly hardened up. The committee had made, complete arrangements, and the capable secretaries, Messrs C. Webster and A. R. Ryder, aided by the megaphone steward, Mr S. Paul, kept matters merrily moving, so that the courts were seldom idle. Over 00 games were played on 'the four available courts. The appointment of umpires is a distinct com pi i - liient to the organisation. The umpiring on the whole, was good, though too many foot faults were allowed to pass by. The attendance throughout was igood, and the scene, particularly in the afternoon, was very animated. The closeness of the play—many games running into 'vantage points—was a compli'ment to the work of the handicappers, [Messrs Nicholson, Griffiths and WebIster. The first day's play is usually decided to a sorting-out of "the unfit,'' and as all the leading players remain in, some good matches should be seen before the finals are reached. Miss Mills had charge of the afternoon tea. which was arranged in a spacious marquee. Detailed results were as follows:
