Rifle Shooting
i >'Dl-:« S:a;\'i; R COXDITIOXri .SOME fiOid) KHOOTIXG AT WAHVAKAUIO.
At the present time, when the British Empire is engaged in the greatest war that the world Ims ever known, too much encouragement eannot lie given to rillc-shooting, particularly when such is carried out under actual'service- conditions, and it is pleasing to note that considerable int.' --rest is being evinced in the rifle, both by young shots and old. This was evidenced at the second annual •No. S group shoot which was held at the Rcwa Rewa rifle range, Waiwakaiho, yesterday. This was open to cadets! Territorials, and members of rifle clubs throughout the group, which extends from New Plymouth to Taumarnnni, and, despite the fact that a considerable number of good and enthusiastic shots have already departed for the front, there were splendid entries, being a considerable advance on last year. In all, some 11(1 competitors faced the music, and of these Senior Cadets provided*more than half the number, every company as far as Ibiwera being fully represented. Hide club members were also fairly strong, but in the Territorial section there was not such keen competition. All sections fired under similar conditions, and at the same time, save that the Cadets might use a rest' which the rifle club members and Territorials could not do. Rifles had to be without slings, no aperture or sibling V-sights were to be used. Figure targets were utilised in every ease. The day was fine, hut there was a fairlystrong wind blowing across the range, which made shooting difficult. Still! sonic excellent scores' were put up by both Cadets and rill.- club men, who shared the honors of the da v. Indeed, in th.; grouping i.oget at 100 yards both Cadet 11. L. Lucena (X.PJT.S ) and Pi.lcmnn '.\ r ;.rett (\".P.) put all their five shots inside the three-inch ring—a great performance Three other Cadets 1 and riflemen each put all their shots in | a four-inch ring, and only one Terri-1 torial secured a ■possible/'' "Possibles'', were numerous in the snap-shooting. ) At the long ranges the wind played I havoc with many of the competitors, but I
quit.' i h'.igc number touched pn:.cmoney. The committee had undertaken ft big order to run the meeting through in one day, but the arrangements made by the staff were so complete that there was no hitch, and four matches were completed when the train left.
I Captain Tiichardson, Croup Commander, had charge of the range, and he was assisted at the firing-point bv Majors Henty and Fletcher.' Lieut. Crutch had charge of the trenches, being assisted by Stafl'.f-Vrgcant-Ma.ior tfesp and Sfafi-Sergeant-Tnstructors Hill and Garden. The marking gave every satisfaction. StaiT-Quartermaster-Sergcant Collins had charge of the commissariat, which was a very important feature. The secretarial end was aMv kept up by Lieut W. H. Jones, assisted by Lieut. W. If". Humphrey, who got the results out 1 promptly, and paid out to the moment ] an important item when competitors had a train to catch. Detailed results:— j
