I A remarkable charge was preferred in the Police Court against Grant Hervey, the well-known author, that Hervey falsely pretended to John Norton that lie had misconducted himself on two occasions with Mrs Norton, and then made a wilful false promise that he would supply information which would enable Norton to discover Mrs Norton misconducting herself with Hervey, by means of which false promise Hervey attempted j which false promise, Hervey aketmpted I to obtain from Norton £2OO with intent to defraud. Hervey was remanded *2OO bail. j .FORGED PAPER MONEY. Melbourne, December 31. The Treasury has received evidence that an attempt has been made-to forge Commonwealth ten-shilling notes and that some of the forgeries are already in circulation. Although the minutest details of the printing are reproduced with accuracy, the crudeness of the coloring, and the different quality of paper is pronounced. The Treasury does not , anticipate that the fraud will prove extensive. It offers a reward ot £IOO for information leading to the conviction of the forger and utterer. GOVERNOR-GENERAL ON NATIONAL EDUCATION. Sydney, December 31. Speaking at Presbyterian orphan homes at Parramatta, the GovernorGeneral said he had always been a strong supporter of national education and an opponent of sectarianism in edution of the churches cation.
