Dunedin, December 'ill. Tlie lirst wool sales began this morning. There were 15,!)•>!) bales offered, ! against 4722 last year, the great disparity being due to the present crisis. Considering the fact of the total absence of Continental and American bid- ■ ding, and that the bulk of the purchasing fell to Bradford and local and Scotch mills, the prices were astonishingly good, especially for best super half-brcds, which brought from 12d to 14-y,d, better than the prices obtained at any sale last year. The, sale opened very patehily for inferior grades, but the competition of local mills for high-grade merinos and best super half-breds kept prices up, and in crossbreds the keen competition of the Scotch mills proved a factor. Summing up, super wools were up, average wools were about the same, and inferior down. From the present condition of the market, however, it is very difficult to judge on what basis buyers are operating. NEW PLYMOUTH MARKETS. RETAIL PRICES. NEW PLYMOUTH, DECEMBER 5.
