HIGH COMMISSIONER'S CABLE. Wellington, December 9. Following is the High Commissioner's report under date London, December 8: Russian official messages neither confirm nor contradict the German capture of Lodz. They state that the defence of Lodz is no longer an urgent military necessity, as holding it has embarrassed the Russians, who'have withdrawn to revive the offensive. There was great activity by the Allies and the enemy in France yesterday. The Allies are making a marked advance. Vermelles, the scene of desperate fighting during the last two months, has been taken by the French after a brilliant assault.
