An Englishman who has returned from Germany says that Berlin persists in the statement that Germany is at war purely in self-defence against the "wicked and ambitious entente," who are anxious to crush their strongest rival. Educated Germans confidently expect a land victory, but are prepared for naval defeat. They assert the impossibility of famine occurring in Germany, owing to the crops being extraordinarily good. Germany claims that the war bonds for 50 millions have been over-subscribed, and the subscriptions to an unlimited loan have reached 63 millions.
