RUSSIANS STEADILY ADVANCING.
SUCCESSFUL OPERATIONS IN AUSTRIA. APPALLING SLAUGHTER.
Received 1, 11,20 p.m. St. Petersburg, September 1. Although Austria-Hungary h as a m „. lion men in the field, opposing the enemy, the Russians are steadily advancing and successfully holding* back the enemy's attempt to outflank them in the vicinity of Lublin. Moreover, Lemberg is half encircled.
The slaughter on the various battlefields lias been appalling. The Austrians were defeated outside the fortified town of Zamose.
