HUBFORD ROAD.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

The war, of course, is the chief topic of conversation in these parts as elsewhere, and your ever-valuable paper is eagerly looked forward to for the latest reports of the great struggle. The fine weather of the, past "week has caused all stock-owners to wear a broad smile, as stock on the whole are lowen in condition this year and fodder shorter than usual. Practically every farmer on the road has lost a beast or two during the winter. All hands are busy preparing ground for the plough, several paddocks being ploughed already. Mr. E. Walsh has just had twenty acres of fern land cultivated for turnips, and intends to clear more. All this helps to make thinks look more prosperous. Mr. Shrimpton has rebuilt his cheese factory at the top end of the road, and intends running from September 1. It is rumored that Mrs. Thompson has sold her farm to a Feilding party. The annual school examination took ' place on Friday, the 21st inst. The examiner was well pleased with the results, the school grounds especially calling forth his praise. The school children are at present enjoying a week's freedom, and their teacher a week's rest with her parents. Our series of weekly euchre parties has proved very successful during the winter, there often being twelve tables. The last week in July a team of Hurford road players journeyed to Omata to try their skill against the Omata player's, the results being in favor of Hurford road. A return match took place in the Hurford school on Tuesday, 18th. Owing to the Oakura ball being held the same night, the Omata team was several short, and to save disappointment the deficiency was made up by our men, Omata this time scoring.

The milk supply at the butfcr factory is increasing* and is now running dailv.

The annual meeting of factory shareholders is to be held in the Town Hall, New Plymouth, on September 19.
