The following suggestion to raise money for the War Fund is made by a. correspondent to the Inglewood paper: There are about 1000 licensed houses in .the Dominion drawing on an average of • l>ecr (say) (i hogsheads a week (a very small average), which equals 8000 hogsheads. I would suggest that the brewers of the Dominion sdart a "Beer War Fund"' and charge the publicans' £2 per hogshead extra. This would bring in a weekly cheque of £.12,000. The licensed victuallers have themselves a war fund to light the prohibitionists—why not show their loyalty and 'help the War Fund? Now is their chance, and the result will assist them greatly next December. The brewers are giving handsomely—and they can afford it. Wake up, "John Bull' 1 publicans! Mr. W. A. Hewitt, Stratford manager for the Xew Zealand Loan and 'Mercantile Agency Co., Ltd., has received advice that the company has donated .toftO fo the Patiiotio War Fund, and that t'hey havj decided on paying ail those in their employ who have volunteered for service half-pay for six months. The company will also keep their positions open, for- them on their return. This donation is exclusive of amounts being subscribed by the Australian and Londo.i offices. The rush for enlistment in the maisn body of the force ha l "- been something piienoimenal, ami up to date 1451 men in Wellington alone, exclusive tef territorials, have applied to be admitted. The rate at which applicants are presentau; themselves far exceeds the requirement* of tile authorities, lm:, all the. names of prospective recruits are being 'taken, and a selection from thiese will eventually be made.
