Mr Massev lias notified the ComiinonAvealth Government that the New Zealand Government will assume the responsibility for the payment, of the charges on goods from German shins .to _be re-consigned to New Zealand. ' Auckland, August 17. The Auckland mobilisation camp now contains about one thousand troops, and all members of the northern portion of the expeditionary force are expected to be under canvas by Wednesday next. The camp was thrown open to visitors to-day. Napier, August 17. Forty-eight volunteers from Gisborne left at 10.13 a.m. yesterday for the con- ■ ivntration camp at Palmerston North. To-morrow morning fi] men leave. The latter were addressed at the Drill Hall to-day by the .Mayor (Mr .1. Vigor Brown) and Lieut-Colonel Hisjop, and complete kits prepared by the ladies were distributed. that whoever offended England offend:.-J the Dominions, and that they would quickly resent it. It was an objectlesson to the world to see the Dominions so spontaneously coming to lire aid of the Motherland. Men and women throughout New Zealand were generously giving of their means in expression of their lovalty, and in every part women were working to provide' clothing and comforts for those who were going to the wa.r. The people of New Plymouth were proud of the men who were going to represent Tarara'-.i, knowing that they would he found ready for duty under all circumstances. Whilst absent, the men would be in the minds of th,i people, and their doings eagerly looked for, and on their return they would be as Oicartily welcomed. He wished them all God-speed. (Loud applause.) Private H. Davies (son of BrigadierGeneral Davies) suitably thanked the ladies for their gifts, Cheers were given for the departing contii.geniers, for the ladies, and for New Plymouth. A number of High School boys introduced a new element into the proceedings by singine- the. "Marseillaise." • The band arrived at the close of the procecdings, stud played the. French. Murray I'rijivhart (Stratfordl. t FIRE BRIGADE PUOCESSION. A new note was given last night to the patriotic spirit 'which is gradually hut surelv obsessing New PI;, mouth. The fire brigad-s of New Plymouth and l-'itzroy organised a torchlight procession, at which the Band assisted. This novel feature attracted a large crowd and gave the town a very animated appearance for a short while, besides being an outward and visible sign of that vast current of patriotic feeling which is ■possessing the people. The. procession was formed at !VI Cover street corner of Devon street, the Band taking the lead. Then came the , coronation coach that recently did dulv at the fancy dress ball. This was followed by a lorry on which was mounted a model of II.Vi.S. New Zealand. The town brigade's motor engine followed, and the liremcii were distributed among the procession earning torches. On arriving at tile Theatre Royal the Band played "Rule Brilann a" and tli.National Anthem, the brigades and public, lustily singing the words of the-* stirring national songs. The entertainment at the Theatre Royal was specially arranged for the occasion and it attracted a large audience. The proceeds are being devoted to the patriotic fund.
