Mr J. Brown was yesterday re-elected chairman of directors of the Maketawa Dairy Company for th o eighteenth yea.in succession. A well-known and highly respected veteran answered the last call at Wangamii (says the Herald) on Saturday evening last, in th e person of\Mr John Wright. Tho deceased was one of the old 57th Regiment—the "Die Hards," and practically from the day he. joined the army in 1852 until he took his discharge in 1864, he was on foreign or active service. He enlisted in 1852: served in Corfu, 1853-4; Crimea, 1854-0; left Crimea in June, 185 C, for Malta, remaining there until June, 1858. Left Malta for the West Indies, on service there until the end of 1860, when he left for New Zealand, arriving here in January, I£6l. On active service with his regiment until he took his discharge in March-, 1804. For services in the Imperial Army the deceased was the holder of three war medals, viz., Crimea (three clasps)—Sebastapol, Inkerman and Balaclava, Turkish medal, and New Zealand medal. He was wounded whilst in the trenches during iihe Siege of Sebastapol. During the 1868-70 "Maori troubles, Mr Wright served with the Wanganiui (Militia, sharing all the hardships of -those days. From then until the time of his death, Mr Wright resided in Wanganui.
