Wilson, prpsident of the Taranaki Diffbrict Law Society, on behalf of the law practitioners of Taranaki, first congratulated His Woreor 011 his appointment to the judicial bench, expressing tilie wish that he would long bp spared to occupy that dtetingwislhed position. The bar had tod fclie privilege of welcoming every present member of the bench, and this' in itself tended to counteract thp somewhat restricted outlook of men practising in a quiet and sequestered corner of the country. He toped that the kindly relations Bfctween bciwh and bar would long continue.' His Honor' expressiad his high appreciation of the courtesy extended to 'him. He was, in forensic matters, a stranger to New Plynttith, although he 'hail lan'ded there 40 yearsi previously in a surf 'boat, and llite was glad to see now in the modern wfliarf and breakwater evidences that the town was rapidly emerging from the, state of to which Mr Wilson had refewed. Ho iiad been struck with ihc marvellous progress of he town. He was as yet but an apprentice on the bench, and Wad relied, as -lie wtould have in the future to rely, on the eo-ioperation, and good widhes of the members of the bar. This aid had been u.ost read% extended and he hoped that no action of his wooM infer(T.pt it, for mutual good feeling and confidence between bench and tar were most beneficial to litigants.
