BURGLAR BROUGHT TO BOOK.
AN AUSTRALIAN CRIMINAL. Per Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. After having successfully operated three burglaries in Auckland during the Christmas holidays, an Australian criminal, named Albert Gordon Smith, alias John Ross, bolted south, to be ingloriously tripped up when he tried a simple theft at Culverden. Smith, who had been declared an habitual criminal in Australia, is a particularly athleticlooking, red-headed individual, and at the time of his arrest was carrying a revolver, but in Constable Goldie, of Culverden, he met a still more 'husky personality, who gave him no chance for a strong-arm display. Smith had on him at the time of his arrest various articles of jewellery that connected him with the Auckland burglaries, and, after having been sentenced for theft down South, he was sent up here to stand his trial for the burglaries. He came before Mr. E. C. Cutten, S.M., this morning, and was charged that he broke and entered on December 23 last the premises of F. R. Bailey, and stole jewellery valued at £2l His; on December 20, the premises of W. Roberts, and stole £li 8s (id, and jewellery valued at £4 10s; and on December 29, the premises of F. Maxwell, and stole goods valued at £B. Smith pleaded guilty, and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
