LATE MR. GOVETT.

A PULPIT TRIBUTE. . Before commencing his sermon at St. Mary's Church last night, the Bev. A. H. C'olvile made the following eloquent reference to the late Mr. C. W. Govett: "I wish to make one short reference to the passing of a man whose name has been known and honoTed in this town as that of a personality which has for long been intimately connected with this church and its work. Mr. Clement William Govett was a man who would have disliked intensely any public eulogy of himself. The generous help which he gave to the Church and to private individuals was done quietly and unostentatiously, in the sight of God and not of man, but his life is bound to have a greater influence—indirect but unmistakable—over many, who did not know him personally. It is always inspiring to think of a man who possessed a strong devotion to duty, a hatred of sham and humbug, a love of truth and justice, even though he does find it hard sometimes to suffer fools gladly. It is always inspiring to think of a man of indomitable spirit and courage, who will take up his burden of private sorrow and suffering and hear it with a resolution that will not allow of frctfulness or complaint. Such a man was the late Clement William Govett, and one feels instinctively that a strong spirit such as his will seek out a greater work, and find a wider field of usefulness in the life beyond. For his example of straight dealing and clean living, for his steadfastness and courage and strength of spirit, we have to thank and praise Almighty God. May the souls of the faithful by the mercy of God rest in peace." The funeral of the late Mr. Govett took place the interment being private.
