The best known of all the Scottish Peers, perhaps, was the Duke of Argyll, who. as Marquess of Lome, led tu tho altar Princess Louise of England. As the headofjhe Clin Campbell, the Duko occupied the proudest position among the Highland lords, for his family was the most widely and nobly connected of any in the three king-dorm. n<yt excepting the Hamiltons, and bis titles would take as long in reciting as those of the Prince of Wales himself. Born in 1845, he went to Eton, thc.nce to St. Andrews, and finished at Trinity College, Cambridge. He early took u:i active share in Tolunteer military service, first becoming lieutenant -colonel commandant of (the First Argyll and Bnte Artillery, and was honorary colonel of several fine volunteer and militia regiments. He found a political life, agreeable a3so, and he represented Argyllshire as a. Liberal from ISIIB to 1878, but failed to get in for Hampshire in 18S5. He sat for South as a Liberal Unionist from lS».i to nsfK), when he succeeded his .father as Ninth Duke, and he wns for five years Governor-Gen-eral for Canada. So powerful a Peer must needs have many Territorial responsibilities, and he was invested with the duties of,.among other positions, the Hereditary Master <rf the King's Household in Scotland, Admiral of the Western Isles. Lord Lieutenant of several counties; he was a Privy Councillor, and a Knighit of the Thistle. G.C.M.G., G.C.V.0., and was Councillor of the Order of St. Michael ami St. George. The heir-presumptive i- 1 Lord ArchiUild Campbell, his brother.
