BOOKMAKERS FINED.
POLICE TRAP SUCCESSFUL. By Telegraph—Press Association. Palmerston X.. Last Night. , At the Police Court to-day, two bookmakers, Jack Moughan and Thomas Torpey, were charged with betting on licensed premises. It appears that Inspector Wilson (Wanganui) detailed Constables Furnworth (Wanganui) and Brown (New Plymouth) to try and get bets with the accused, with successful results. Farnworth sorted out the winners, and made bets with both accused, with successful results in ?ome instances, the illegal transactions taking place in two local hotels. Moughan denied on oath any recollection of having laid the odds with Constable Farnworth, but admitted having been previously convicted on a similar-charge. Moughan, as a second offender, was lined £SO and costs, while Torpey, a first offender, was fined £25 and costs.
