(j Miss Elsie Bennett 7 Miss Pansy Popplewcll "..! 8 VARIOUS ACTIVITIES TIIO Taranaki friendly societies are mustering strongly to the support ol their candidate, Miss Elsie Bennett. It is understood that his young lady's position has advanced with a rush during the past two or three days, and whea the returns commence to arrive from the various lodges throughout Taranaki she should seriously threaten the •leader's position. A general meeting of all friendly society members and supporters will he held in the Foresters' Hall, Gill Street, at 7.30 p.m. to-night, to make further arrangements for tih* campaign. A band concert will be hrild on Friday evening at the Red House •corner, when a collection will be taken in aid of the candidate.
Last night a very successful euchre party was held in the Rolland Hall, when supporters of all candidates enjoyed a keen contest for the prizes, which consisted of free votes for the Carnival Queen contest. The ladies' prize was won by Mrs Harvey, and the gentlemen's by Mr W. Sole.
The efforts of the XI. Regiment Bund on behalf of Mis 3 Hawkc's Committed attracted a torse atcndance at Kawaroa Park last nieht, when the hand concert organised by tho committee took ■ place. Tho programme, which wag erlthusiasticallv received, included the march, "To Beat tho Band"; "Zamp&"j waltz, ''Sweet Seventeen"; a selection solo by Mr C. Austin, and trombone solo by Mr F. Coleman. Miss Vcta Gilbert's Candidatuie received a "ood help at YVnitara last night, when a crowded beuse attended' a performance by the Royal Pierrots,, given in conjunction with the Empire Pietures. The Misses Gilbert especially had an enthusiastic reception. Items were also contributed by Messrs. Lambert and Guy Morey and Misa Leech. Miss K. Bennett played the accompaniments. Tho Pierrots will appear at the Theatre Royal during the picture performance on Friday night. A dance in aid of Miss Gilbert's candidature will be held in the Brougham Street Hall to-night.
The East End Strolling Troubadours sauntered into Inglewood last night, and gave an open-air performance in support of the claims of their candidate, Miss Madge Henrichs. They took up their stand in the new band rotunda, and delighted a large audience for over two and a-lmlf hours. Messrs. Nippert anil Vinson were in specially good form. The young ladies of the warty, aided by Miwsra. Jag. McNeill, Adam.% A. Matthews, F. Culgher and Merrylees, tooli up the biggest street collection that ban ever been taken in Inglewood. Tke ■ Troubadour* were given a pressing invitation to repeat the performance. Tonight a social and dance will be held ia the East End • avilion, and on Thursday • next a monster euchre party and dance will be held in the same place, in port of Miss lTonrichs, whose committee advise the public not to be surprised if" she is in pride of nosition again on Saturday.
