BAND CARNIVAL.
' tj&ki A SUCCESSFUL KIXALE. The Hand Carnival was brought to a conclusion last night, after a nmrviil-lously-,successful nine days' run, which probably ranks a., a record for the New Plymouth Theatre Koval. The goods not disposed of during the l'air wer« quickly auctioned by -Mr L. A. Xolan. The Arcadian Uevollers frisked before a scene of enthusiasm seldom witnesatjl in the theatre. The majority of the items were encored, the performer* being recalled at'ain and again. The popul&y favorites were greeted be their constituents with showers of coin* mid with bouquets and baskets of llowers. Tim committee adopted the plan of collecting the money showered on the stag* in the presence of the audience, and at once counting it and nimouncin* ih» amount. Had this plan been adopted from the start it would have prevented sonic unpleasant .suggestions. Miss Me(juire easily retained her position as first favorite with the audience, and it the Quaker Girl Jfrcne and "Path of Mowers" her cash receipts were nearly £2, being far ahead of the others. She was recalled again and twain. and the audience were not satisfied eren after she had advanced to the front of th* footlights and bowed her acknowledgments. .Miss Elsie liennett, the friendly Micieties' candidale, made bar debut, and though she was not assisted by any stage setting or tableau effects," lie* ■sweet singing and charming stage presence made her at once at home with her hearers. She was recalled for be* singing of "Mother Cacive," and gave as an encore, "I Wonder if Ever tin Rose," and in response to another enthusiastic recall repeated the last verse. She received some lovelv bouquets, an 4 her 'inmortei'K proved themselves easily second with their spontaneous donations of cash. Miss Harrison song in th* •'Midsummer Moon," with rquallv pleasing effect. .Mr. Arthur V. t'arbines'9 exl ravaganza. "The Carnival Queen," was again a huge success, an additional encore verse bringing down the> house. The encores made the nrogramme extend until after 11 iuu., but even then the audience was loth to go. The ''Swing Song," with miss Alison Hlair as soloist, was quite a feature. Afterwards the theatre was cleared, and the performer., -.ncnt a pleasant hour or two in dancing.
