The Medical Legal Society discussed Mercier's proposal that doctors should not be considered responsible for llio death of a prisoner refusing substantial meals if offered. A barrister declared that there was an obligation on gaolers to see that prisoners were properly fed. Should a hunger-striker become .helpless; any doctor refusing to apply the resources of science to preserve life would be chargeable with murder.
