BEST BRITISH TRADITIONS UPHELD. ELEPHANT HAIDERS RAIDED. A STIRRING NARRATIVE. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright Received 8, 5.5 p.m. London, March 7. Advices from Naibori give a stirring narrative of heroism and pluck in a remote district to the south-east of Lake Rudolf. Lieutenant Lloyd-loncs. in command of the Loiyangarana station, six weeks' march from Nairobi, started with Rittermaster, a political officer, and 25 of the King's African Rillcs. a score of camels and a dozen Somali constables, in search of Abyssinian elephant raiders. They discovered the hitler strongly Btockaded in unknown numbers., Lieutenant Lloyd-Jones advanced quickly with 15 rides, hoping- to rush the only entrance to the Zareba. The robbers failing to respond to a promise that their lives would be spared if they surrendered, the bugles sounded the assault, and the soldiers dashed forward. The bugler was hit, then a soldier was killed. Finally Lloyd-Jones was shot through botli legs. The remaining 12 soldiers retreated, leaving the two white officers and three orderlies at the raiders' mercy. The orderlies offered to carry off Lloyd-Jones, but the latter bade tlu'iu rush the gate. This they achieved, with great gallantry, killing all inside the zareba. Lieutenant Lloyd-Jones was suffering terrible pain and delirium, and owing tr the inadequate supply of anaesthetics, was threatened with lockjaw, but through the devotion of two Abyssinian orderlies, he waß carried on a stretcher for 43 days, a distance of 500 miles to the nearest medical station. He is now recovering at the Nairobi hospital, but will be crippled for life.
