On the anniversary of the labor riots of 11105 a general strike, was begun, and 70,000 out of 350,01)0 factory "workers have, struck. When leaving work they sang revolutionary songs, and made other demonstrations. Tlie police dispersed the crowds, heading them through the thoroughfares with drawn swords. STRIKE 01' COAL POUTERS. CARMI-iX PROBABLY GO OUT. By Cable- Press Association—Copyright London, January 22. Eight thousand London coal porters have, struck. The men's meeting rejected the masters' oll'er to 'settle" special grievances with a minimum of 255. It is feared 70,000 general carmen will strike in sympathy. Two thousand .have already struck. Amateur coal porters, including many clerks, are endeavoring to cope with the situation. A WISE COUNCIL. SLAUGHTERMEN'S DEMANDS. Sydney, January 23. The Labor Council has issued a circular to the unions condemning the tendency to revert to strikes instead of conciliation and arbitration and urging them in the interests of sane unionism to take no action in the direction of a strike before consulting the council's executive. The stock sales are disorganised owing to a threatened crisis through the slaughtermen demanding an increase from C 4 5s to £(!, and'the laborers an increase of .CI weekly from Monday. The employers are opposed to passing | the increase on to the public and are resisting . They have decided that the demand must be referred to the Industrial Registrar.
