ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
A SHUNTING ACCIDENT. Per Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night. When a railway porter named L. Jeffery was assisting in shunting operations at Lawrence, at about mid-day today, he was caught between a waggon and the loading stake at the cattle yards. The extent of his injuries is not yet known, but they are regarded as somewhat serious. DEATH FROM DROWNING. Wanganui, Last Night. An inquest was held this afternoon into the circumstances surrounding the death of Sarah Billinghurst, a widow, aged 67, whose body was found in the river. Deceased, who acted as a housekeeper, had been missing since June 3. She was not of strict temperance habits, and she had just collected her old age pension. There was no evidence to show how she got into the river, and a verdict was returned accordingly. , MOTOR CYCLE ACCIDENT. Mr. V. G. Stapleton, of Hawera, who was picked to play in the Association match agaijjst 11.M.5. New Zealand, while riding in on his motor-eycle from Hawera, yesterday, ran into the Mangao- i raka bridge, and severely fractured his knee. He was brought 'in to the New Plymouth Hospital. A SCHOOLGIRL BURNED. Auckland, Last Night. A schoolgirl named May O'Buglein was admitted to the hospital to-night suffering from severe burns about the t. The girl went outside the house a candle which set,a light to her ing. Her cries for help were heard, and the flames were extinguished. After medical attention she was sent to the hospital. Her condition is regarded as serious.
