THE TAONUI.
WRECKAGE FOUND. By Cable—Press Association—Copyright. London, June 17. Lloyds' Penzance correspondent reports that a lifebuoy and a piece of a boat both marked "Taonui, Glayon," four life jackets, and a piece of teak panelling have been found at St. Just. HOPES OF HER SAFETY. Per Press Association. Gisborne, Last Night. The Taonui, referred to in to-day's .cables, is probably the Gisborne Sheepfarmers' Company's new tug, which was reported a few days ago to have left the Clyde for Gisborne. She was in command of Captain Sewell, of Gisborne, and carried a crew of a dozen men. The Taonui is a well-equ-.pped ocean-going tug, and was built by Messrs. Wm. Chambers & Co., of Ruthorglen, a well-known Clyde firm.of light draught shipbuilders. She was constructed under the personal supervision of Captain W. B. Sewell, the company's marine superintendent, who went Home specially for the purpose. She w."s reported to be a first-class Clyde job, and perfectly well equipped for the long voyage to New Zealand. The Taonui is a. single screw, steel tug of about 90 tons, and is powerfullyengined and equipped with a modern salvage plant. Mr. de Lautour, chairman of directors of the Sheepiarmers' Com■piriy, when approached this evening, stated that; whilst the news was disquieting, the company was hopeful that it would get more favorable information in a few hours. Advice had been received that there had been heavy weather on the British coast and that vessels were sheltering. The company would be fully advised as to the situation by its Home correspondents.
