THE PYRAMUS. . Per Press Association. Wellington, June 11. ■H.M.S. Pvramus leaves at 4 p.m. today for Noumea; thence she -will'.probably be ordered to the New Hebrides. CONSTABLE SMYTH'S CASE. Wellington, Last Night. Commissioner C'ullen, speaking on the dismissal of Constable Smyth, at Greymouth, said that Smyth was deputed to wateh the timber trucks on the Greymouth wharf in consequence of reports that serious thefts of timber had taken place. His watch was to last till 5 a.m., but at ten minutes to four a.m. the sergeant discovered Smyth in the watchhouse, and a false entry in the book that he (Smyth) did not visit the station till 5 .a.m. Regarding Smyth's statement that he mistook the time, Commissioner Cullen said that there was a clock in the watchhouse where Smyth was, which regulated the hours of duty at the station. At what time Smyth left the wharf his superiors did not know. He abandoned his post, where he was placed for a very important purpose, and then aggravated his lapse by making a false entry. "Neither the Department nor any private employer would stand that," said the Commissioner.
THE DANGEROUS HAT PIN. Invcrcargill, Last Night. Several prosecutions of women for wearing unprotected hat pins when travelling in the tramears, were adjourned to-day. Counsel for the defence argued that the by-law was ultra vires, as it made the offence complete, if the hatpin was dangerous in the opinion of the conductor, thus usurping the function of the Court. MISHAP TO A SCOW. Wellington, Last Night. The Maroro left Nelson on Friday for Havclock to load timber for Sydney. She was empty and missed stays at' noon on Tuesday off the east entry at Point Polorus Sound. She drifted in against the shore, her stern touching the cliff. The steamer Nikau got alongside at 1.30 a.m. yesterday, and got a line aboard, but an hour and a half's hauling could not pull her off owing to falling tide. Another attempt was made at noon, and the vessel came off after half an hour's pull. She now lies in Ketu Bay leaking slightly forward.
