THS VISIT TO NELSON.
Per Fr«cs Assotiatio*.
Vclioa, LMt Night,
H.M.S. New Zealand sailed this evening for Piete*. -The day's preeeediagt passed off very successfully. Nearly 3,000 school children inspected the battleship during 'the. day, besides a very large number of adults. A great erowd attended the sports this afternoon, and, there will be a handsome surplus over the expenditure on the festivities.
PROPOSED DAIRY PRODUCB GIFT.
"The statement published regarding a present of butter and cheese to the men of the battleship, in which Mr. A. Morton thinks it impossible to get such a present together oa account of various technical objections, sounds rather like if the country people are a mean-hearted lot," writes our Maketawa correspondent. "I'm sure if the ordinary suppliers had it put to them that a sub. of a paltry 'bob' individually would enable Tarahaki produce to get a big and eheap advertisement, any action the directors would take would unanimously be endorsed. Many a shilling is spent to worse advantage."
A meeting of the Catering Committee was held last evening, when arrangements in connection with the visit of H.M.S. New Zealand to New Plymouth were disciissed. It was decided to place a hot water depot at the foot of the Breakwater. Sports will be run during the day, and there will' be lolly scrambles and other excitement for the children, but the Committee, in making arrangements, recognises that the success of these depends mainly upon the children being under proper control. A further meeting of the Catering Committee will be held next Monday night at 8 o'clock, and any citizens willing to assist are invited to attend.
