SWIMMING.
HOEY LEAVES. 11. Hoey, the well-known Now Zealand long-distance swimmer, who previously went to England to try the Channel swim, but who was prevented by bad weather, left by the Marama on Friday, to make the attempt this season. Hoey has arranged with Jabez Woolfe to make the swim in company, and they will endeavour to get across on August 24th. Woolfe is to have a try this month, and if he is successful no further attack on the distance will be made, but the pair will try and swim the whirlpool at the Niagara Rapids, where Captain Webb met his death. Hoey, who is a typical New Zealander, standing 6ft 2in and weighing 2201b5, is confident of his ability to cross from the English to the French coast, and his attempt will be watched with considerable intrest on this side of the world.
