LICENSING COMMITTEE.
ANNUAL MEETING. With one exception there weTe no objections raised to the applications for various licenses, considered by the New Plymouth Licensing Committee yesterday morning, when Mr. A. Crooke, S.M., presided over an attendance of the following members:—Messrs. H. J. Okey, M.P., J. 3. Connett, W. Ambury, and D. H. McDonald. This was the case of the Taranaki Hotel, the new licensee, Mr. G. Emeny, applying for a ipublican's license, Senior-Sergeant Haddrell stated that the Police objected to the license being granted for the reason that the hotel was badly in need of repairs, and nothing had besn spent on it. The Chairman: What do you find fault with?
.Sergeant Haddrell replied that he found fault with the whole building, and until they were assured that something would be done to place the whole property in good order and condition, lie thought the license should not be granted. He had no objection, however, to the license being issued from month to month. He explained that on the death of the owner the property had gone into the hands of the Public Trustee, and the lease expired to-day. For some time past, the Public Trustee had been trying to sell, but recognised that some £3OO or £4OO would be required to be spent on the place. He (the speaker) understood that the property had been disposed of, although the transaction had not been completed. The applicant was going to be the new owner, and the repairs required would be a very-grave liability. Mr. Billing, who appeared on behalf of the applicant, stated that when the property came into the hands of the Public Trustee, the main object of that officer was to sell, and not to effect any repairs. The Public Trustee had just recently entered into an arrangement for a sale, and Mr. Emeny would be shortly completing the transfer, which had actually been sent down for signature. Mr. Emeny had recognised all along, when he bought the place, that he would have to effect considerable repairs. Mr. Billing submitted that this was a case where the license should be granted, with ,Mr. Emeny's undertaking—and he was prepared to give this—that these repairs would be effected. Counsel pointed out that the fact that the license had not been granted might seriously interfere with Mr. Emeny's chances of financing the deal.
Consideration of the application was adjourned for a month. ' OTHER LICENSES. All the other licenses were granted as follows: New applications ifor old' ;3iouses: John Rothery (Mr. G.
