ENTERTAINMENTS.

"THE MONK AND THE WOMAN."' The Marlow Dramatic Company presented "The Monk and the Woman" in thte Theatre Royal last evening to a fair house, the bad weather considerably J affecting the attendance. The story of the play centres on a plot by Henri de Montrale to assassinate a libertine king, whose tyranny has turned his.subjects against him. Both the king and the would-be-king, love the maiden Liane, who for safe custody is placed in a monastry. Here the plot thickens, and two monks and two novices come to stay and remain to the bitter end through scenes of bloodshed, murder, and destruction. The King orders the marriage of Liane to de Montrale, but fortune favors Paul, the novice, and overpowering the aspiring king, he disguises himself, and is married to the woman he had learned to love in the monastry. Henri de Montrale, however, perseveres, and, after he has murdered the Queen, raised a successful insurrection, and runs his sword through the King, he and his fellow traitors finally'fAll victims to a Higher Hand than man's. The curtain falls with Paul and Liane again united, The cast of characters is a strofig one.

THEATRE ROYAL PICTURES. The Royal Pictures will again occupy the theatre to-night, when a complete change of programme will be shown. The star picture is a magnificently colored drama, "The Forger," and there are several other good dramatic items, including an English film, by the Hepworth Company, "Sally in our Alley," and one of the most amusing comedies ever released, entitled "Leopold and the Leopard." EMPIRE PICTURE PALACE. The thoroughly entertaining doteetire drama "The Smart Lady Detective," and the magnificently staged "Rose of Thebes," will be screened for the last occasion at the Empire Theatre to-night. Commencing at 2.30 to-morrow there will be the usual matinee, when a complete new programme will be screened.
