THE WINTER SHOW.
Judging in connection with the Winter Show commenced yeesterday, when Messrs. S. Knuekey and A. H. Halcombo started judging the swede competition for Messrs. E Griffiths and Coy's £lO 10s gold watch. As there are twentytwo competitors, and their swede patches are located in different parts of Taranaki, it will be some days before they are able to complete their work. The result will be made known on tho first day of the Show, after the competitors liave complied with the condition that calls upon them to exhibit three swedes from the crop judged, The judges report that from what they have seen of the crops this year they are far superior to anything judged in previou* years. Taking this as a criterion, the exhibits of farm produce will be something worth going a long way to see. Judges for all classes have been well selected, and it is anticipated that there will be no refusals; indeed, in the; majority of cases, acceptances have already been received.
The local Technical College has reserved a space of 000 square feet, with the intention of making a display of all classes of work produced by the pupils at the college. Applications are still coming in from proprietors of various side shows, from as far south as Dunedin, and it is expected that most of those now at the Waikato Show will be doing business here. The catalogue is in the hands of the printers, and as soon as it is ready it will be available for the public. Entries for the dog trial will close on Saturday next, and are already coming in very freely. Although this is the first occasion on which the Society has ur lertaken this class of interesting exhi' "tion, it is expected that record entries will be received. This feature, n' hough under the auspices of the Society, will be controlled by a staff of officials independent 'of, the committee, and all o,f them are men who have had considerable experience in connection with the dog trials. The trials will take place at Frankleigh Park, on June 'll and 12. The admittance to the trial ground will be Is each day. Luncheon will be obtainable on the ground, and also luncheon and tea at the Winter RJjow building, Mr. Wooler having secured the catering rights.
