CRUELTY TO ANIMALS

WELL-DESERVED FUNDS. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. At the Magistrate's Court George Bradley was fined £5 and costs, and expenses totalling £2 12s, for beating a horse in an unnecessary and cruel manner. Evidence showed that the vehicle had one wheel in the gutter, and defendant was using the whip in a very severe manner. Then he took the butt end of the whip handle, and presently the horse moved on. Then the driver, according to one witness, "deliberately stopped the horse, tore a piece of shafting from its position, and beat the animal with the bludgeon in a most cruel manner. The blows were so heavy that the horse fairly groaned." John Kelleher was fined £3 and £2 15s costs for working a horse while it was in such a state, being aged, lame and suffering from an incurable disease on both forelegs, so that its destruction had been ordered.
