The presence of Ivaniki frightened the top weights out of the opening event, the Xgamutu Handicap, and the public was not slow to recignise that with W. Price on top the Fordell-trained horse was a really good bet. The eleven horses caused little trouble at the post, and were despatched on even terms. Sylvan Glade momentarily showed out in front of Tree Lucerne and Yankee Doodle, but at the end of a furlong Tree Lucerne had assumed command, and the nijxt were Yankee Doodle, Wild Lupin and Kaniki. Tree Lucerne was done with at the entrance to the straight, and Yankee Doodle was the first to straighten up for the run home. Wild Lupin tackled the leader at the distance, hut Kaniki, on the outside, finished strongly and scored rather easily by half a Ungth. Wild Lupin beat "Yankee Doodle M a neck, and Draft, Sylvan Glade and 1 tree Lucerne followed in that order. [ lmin. ISsec.
j;A11 started in the Mokoia Handicap. Jiiiwu, on the strength of the first day's jrnmiing, was made a warm favorite, Tetikura being next best backed. Tnenru kas. first away, followed by Boronia and Katua. The leader was never asked to (gallop, and was in front *ll the. jvay, iJTetikura displaced Katua in the straight' hut had no chance with Ineuru, who| : fairly revelling in the holding going, ran in an easy winner by half a length!" Katua was a head away third, and Boronia
and Lady Volga were close. Time, lmin, 17sec.
There were no defections from the Manawapou Hurdle Race, and . .gatimaru, ridden by W. Young, was a very hot favorite. Timothy dashed off with the lead, followed by Jackpin, Bismarck and Ngatimaru. Timothy and Jackpin led into the straight, followed by Supreme. Passing the stand, Jackpin struck hard, and Timothy also lost ground by jumping big. Supreme closed on Jackpin running out of the straight, and Ngatimaru improved his position, Bismarck being last. Along the back Ngatimaru and Supreme opened up a big break on Timothy, Jackpin being beaten. Ngatimaru had shook his rival clear before turning for home, and won " very comfortably by four lengths. Bismarck came strongly under punishment, and secured third place four lengths behind Supreme, and the next to finish were Timothy, Oxley and Waimate and Jackpin together, hist. Time, 2min. 53 sec. John Willie was the only one who failed to "come on" in the Opcke Handicap, and, ni the nine runners Kilrain was a very solidly-backed favorite. Clemency dwelt at the post, but the rest hopped out in perfect order. Running out of the straight, the order was Kurnalpi; Kilrain, Minora, Invader and Clemency was last. Kuropotangi ran into second place at six furlongs, and was upsides with Kurnalpi at five, Kilrain, Minora and Invader being next, Invader closed on Kurnalpi as they swung into the straight, and Kilrain was brought up on the rails. At the distance Invader headed Ktinulpi, and Kilrain was knocked hack. Invader just lasted long enough to score by a neck from Kurnalpi, who vvp.s half a length in front of the fast-finishing fiangikapua. Kilrain, who should have won easily, was galloping over everything, and finished close up fourth, and Minora was fifth. Time, lmin. 47sec. A fine field of seventeen sported silk in the Shorts Handicap, Ratana and | Zion finding most supporters. Zion and Ridicule got away first, and after running a furlong Sepoy ran into third place.. Ridicule took command as thev ran into the straight, but failed to withstand the challenge thrown out by Sepoy, who won by nearly.a length. Ratana was finishing fast a length and a half awav. third, and Opeke and Pj.troon finished right up next. Tiora was the last to finish. Time, lmin. 4 3-.mcc.
