THE TIMARU TROUBLE. By Telegraph—Press Association. Dunedin, Last Night, The local Waterside Workers' Union put up a notice this morning at the wharf, saving that no union member was to engage for work on the steamer John, until further notice. The secretary stated that the men had decided to put up (he notice pending instructions from the Federation of Labor headquarters. The John was loaded at Timaru, five unionists and two non-unionist? being employed. The union men asked that the free laborers lie discharged. At this, one Jcft of his own accord, but the other was kept on, and the unionists left the ship, the loading being completed with free labor. This afternoon the Federal ion's reply cam'e to hand, and the agent for the John was informed that the vessel would be discharged as usual. In the meantime the John put into Oamarii, owing to stress of weather, but the locwl agents have made arrangements to work the cargo with their permanent stal!'. What appeared to be an unpleasant incident has happily been averted. Timaru, Last Sight. The port was quiet to-day. Mr. P. C. Webb, of the Federation, came from Christchurch to-day and interviewed some of the heads of the houses concerned in the shipping trade, and asked for a conference regarding the watcrsider.s' strike. No arrangements having been made by the Citizens' Committee for such a contingency, those spoken to as individual* had no authority to promise a conference. The Kiaora, for meat, etc., is expected to-morrow, and the line to be taken by the watersiders will be awaited with interest, but without anxiety, as double the number required ran bo got outside the union.
