WORK AND WAGES.
THE SLAUGHTERMEN'S STiUKE. CALLING OTHERS OUT. Per Press Association. Timani, Last Night. A meeting was held to-night of t«e Smithtield butchers and their assistants who ceased work. Delegates from the Timaru Waterside Workers' Union and the Freezing Unions were present by invitation, and a motion carried unanimously calling on the Parerora Freezing Works' hands and the waterside workers to make common cause with the Smithfield men. It was decided to give ''free" butchers 25 hours to join the Union, failing which killing is to cease at Pareora and the watersiders to refuse to handle meat killed by free labor. These resolutions need confirmation by the respective unions and a mass meeting is to be held on Sunday to discuss the situation.
AN EXPLANATION. Dunedin. Last Nifflit. The Otago Trades and Labor Council's cancellation of registration under the Arbitration, Court has no sinister significance, being made necessary by tho fact that under the constitution they are unable to use their influence and the union funds in aiding thn political side of the harbor programme, even though the ujiipns are willing.
