Arthur Smith, who was before tho Court last Thursday on a charge of being a rogue and a vagabond, and with flourishing a revolver, came up for sentence to-day. The defendant said' that he had been drinking heavily at the time, and was- ordered to come up for sentence when called upon.

A PECULIAR' POSITION. lnvereargill, Last Night. A peculiar position has arisen in connection with the contract for the supply of bread to charitable institutions. The Bakers' Association held a meeting the night before tenders closed, and iixed the price at sV!>d per 41b loaf. The successful tenderer, Mr. J. R. Denby, posted his tender not knowing that there was a fixed price. He has now received notice from the Association lining him £5, and if he continues with the contract he will be fined another £ll. The Charitable Aid Bo.ard has decided not to cancel the contract. , THE TREASURY. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation from the Cook Memorial Committor asked Mr. Massey for a subsidy towards the cost of the Cook Memorial at Queen Charlotte Sound, which amounted to floOO. Mr. Massey said that the Government would, kegp tbe Ward Government's promise and give £370. Ho would not promise anything further at present. The demands for money during the last f<wtUvrs fcafl been simply enormoiif and would hardly be credited. There were an enormous number of applications for school buildings and roads, etc., which amounted to far more than the Government could supply.
