PATEA HARBOR.
PROBLEM FOR THE AUTHORITIES,
Tlie state of the Patea bar (says the Wanganui Chronicle) is causing no small amount of anxiety to shippers at the present time, owing to its shallowness at ordinary tides. Two boats are at present unable to negotiate it for that reason. One, the Kapuni, was fully loaded on Saturday in order to catch the Home boat with a big consignment of cheese, but on account of the state of the bar a portion of the cargo had to be discharged. Even then it was found that the boat could not get over the liar with the depth of water she was drawing, and in consequence she had to remain at the wharf, However, it is expected that the evening's tide will oermit the boats to go out. This must be an unsatisfactory state of affairs for shippers, who, as recently as flood Friday, paid no less than 30s a day to waterside workers for loading their boats. The shippers also have the additional advantage of missing the Home boat, which may mean the additional loss of several hundreds of pounds. The harbor problem is certainly one that requires elose attention at the hands of the authorities.
