Per Press Association.

Gore, Last Night. The Combined New Zealand and Australasian Draughts Championship Tournament, held under the auspices of the Gore Draughts Club, was opened at two o'clock to-day by Mr. G. Anderson, M.P., There are six entries for the championship tournament. The handicap tournament is also being held under the New Zealand Championship rules.

NORTH ISLAND CHAMPIONSHIP,-

The North Island Championship and Handicap Draughts Tournament opened in the New Plymouth Municipal Buildings yesterday afternoon. Visiting competitors who arrived by Thursday's mail train were accorded a civic welcome at the station by the Mayor (Mr. G. W. Browne). Subsequently a meeting of players was held at which rules, as read, were adopted, and the following hours [of play agreed upon:—Afternoon, 2 till 5; evenig. 7 till 10.

There are fourteen competitors and many more would have attended, but for the fact that the fixture clashed with (he New Zealand Tournament. What they lack in numbers, however, they make up in quality, the opening stages of the tourney having been responsible j for some particularly fine play. D.
