SUPREME COURT.

♦ NAPIER SESSIONS. By Telegraph—Per Press Association.. Napier, Friday. The following are sentences passed at the Supreme Court:—Michael Johnson, for carnal knowledge, two years' reformative treatment; Wm. Bashford, alias George Funnell, for horse stealing, nine months' imprisonment; Chas. Kingston, for assault with intent, two years' imprisonment; James David Clifton, for an unnatural offence, five years' reformative treatment. WESTPORT SITTINGS. . Westport, Friday. | In the Supreme Court, addressing the grand jury, Mr. Justice Edwards defended the grand jury system. It was a protection to the liberties of the public. Politics had not hitherto intruded into the administration of justice, but it might happen that politics might be allowed to interfere. The grand jury were representatives of the people. If it were abolished, the work would be left to salaried officers, and grievous injustice might possibly be done. It was essential in the interests of justice that representatives of the people should' stand between the powers and the people. ============= (
