A SOCIAL GATHERING

Last night members of the Tarannki Agricultural Society, together with vis ; iting exhibitors and several of the judges, fraternised in a smoke concert, which was held at the Brougham Street Hall. Over a hundred were present. .Mr. J. S. Connett, president, was in the ! chair. After doing justice to the good things provided by tlie catering committee, under the supervision of Mr. L. Jackson, the following toast list was gone through: "The King"; "Parliament." proposed by Mr. Shaw, responded to hv Mr. Okey; "The Judges," proposed by the president, responded to by Mr. Strang; "Exhibitors," proposed by Mr. A. W. Wood, responded to by Mr. j. D. Mitchell and Mr. F. Mills; "The President," proposed by Mr. Shaw; "Kindred Societies," proposed by Mr. Morton, responded to by Mr. Harloiess (Stratford); "The Dairy Industry," proposed by Mr. Burgess, responded to by Mr. A. Morton; "Agricultural Interests," proposed by Mr. A. Morton, responded to by Mi'. J. Burgess; "Visitors," proposed by Mr. A. H. Halcombe, responded to b'v Mr. Galachan; "The Ladies," proposed by Mr. J. R. Hill; and "The Press," proposed by Mr. H. T. J oil and responded to' by the representatives of the Taranaki Daily News and the New Zealand Farmer.

The majority of the speakers spoke in glowing terms'of the great strides made by the Society, and the enthusiasm displayed by the secretary, Mr. A. Cliff, and the visitors were lavish in their praise of the treatment -accorded. One or two small matters of detail for the smoother working of the iiltricate machinery were suggested, and will no doubt'receive attention. During the evening a musical programme was rendered, the following taking taking part: Messrs. Hutton, Vinsen, Lovell and Mills (songs), and. Eadie, TSlyttie and Goldsworthy (recitations). Mr. W. Perry presided at the piano.
