THE WISDOM OF SOCRATES. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wauganui, Last Night. The annual Conference of the New Zealand branch of the Britsh .Medical Association opened here this evening, under the presidency of Dr. 11. U. Ilatterly. of Wanganui. Some forty-seven delegates have already '.arrived, and others are expected to-morrow. The president's address was on the subject of the relative value of health and education and was in (he main an able plea for less cram and more persuasion, a material modification of the compulsory provisions of the Education Act, a substantially reduced and more elastic syllabus and a wider recognition of the wisdom of the advice given by Socrates more than two thousand years ago: "Bring not up your children by compulsion and fear, but by playing and pleasure."
