DISGRACEFUL DRINKING BOUT.
ITS FATAL -SEQUEL. (Per Press Association). Rotorua, Last Night. At an inquest touching the death of Solomon Newton, a Maori, who was drowned in Lake, Potorua on the evidence showed that a party of fifteen, including three natives, spent a day on the hike. They had with them five dozen bottles of beer and six hot- ! •■ties of whisky, and by the lime Hamurnnn (tlie second port of call) was reached all the liquor had heen consumed. The party were more or less intoxicated, and the organiser of the excursion admitted that lie was not sober enough to remember the details of the accident. Others, however, stated that Solomon was walking along the side of the launch • when he slipped. Although a pood swimmer he made no effort in theVater and sank when the launch was close to him. Evidence was (riven that the man in charge was under the influence of liquor Shortly after binding. ,( verdict of accidental drowning was returned.
