DISTRICT NEWS.

MAKETAWA. ; (From Our Own Correspondent). That the suppliers of the local factory i are determined that the annual picnic •will be a success as far as efforts on their part are concerned, was evidenced by the big attendance held on Friday • evening last at the factory. Mr. J. Brown was voted to the chair, and expressed pleasure at the interest shown by the number who attended. He stated that the committee had a balance of £l7 to »o on with this year. Unfortunately I have mislaid my notes regarding the names of the officials appointed. The grounds of Mr. A. Marshall, a short distance from the factory and railway sta\ tion, will be utilised for the picnic', that gentleman having kindly given permission to use the samp. A good deal of discussion ensued as to the date, and it was found that Thursday being most j suitable was tagged by one function or I another up to the end of March, so the first Thursday in April was decided on. I should like to mention that any other body choosing that day will receive a buster deputation of Maketawaites to know the reason why! A meeting of the working committee is to be held on Monday evening, the 17th. to arrange details, etc.. and it is hoped all will at-i tend, as no effort is to be spared to make the picnic of 1913 as great a success as previous affairs. There is to 1 be an attempt to "square" the weather man, to make arrangements with her Ladyship the Cow. and, further, to obtain the services of the Tnglewood Band, so patrons please don't forget Maketawa. J Much consternation is shown by local carters and others at the strict enforcement by the County Council of its bylaws relating to carting on the roads, and many farmers are in a quandary as to their liability or otherwise if they cart produce off their farms along the road. I understand that the fact of the by-laws not being advertised in the New Plymouth papers is putting many in a false position. During a recent visit to Dudley road ( I was shown the damage done to the foundations of the bridge across the Ngatoro by a recent big flood, and I cer--1 tainly agree with the residents there | that the Moa Road Board are running a j big risk in being dilatory over the matI ter of repairs. A monolith of boulders 1 anil wire-netting with concrete "tie" j should prevent for all time any likeli- , I hood of the bridge collapsing. Certain it is the disappearance of "the bridge would mean serious inconvenience to school children and others, not counting i the loss in cash.
