STRATFORD NEWS.

(From Our Resident Reporter). STiIATFOED EGKOUGII COUNCIL ORDINARY MEETING. At the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council on Monday evening there wore present: His Worship the A Lay or (Mr. W. P. Kirkwood). Crs. R, McK. Mmisoii. J. D. Healy. J. McAllister, J. W. Boon, R. Dingle, T. Lawson. X. J. King, and J. 11. Thompson. An invitation was received from the Church of England Men's Society to attend the open-air service on Good Friday, at 3 p.m.—C'r. King moved that the Society he thanked, and that the matter of attending be left to the individual Councillors. Cr. Lawson asked why the erection of the new firebel 1 tower in Broadway South had not been proceeded with.— The overseer said it was impossible to go on with these small works just now I owing to shortage of labor. Cr. Lawson urged that the present structure should be made safe. Messrs. C. and E. A. Chard, whose contract for gravel and crushed stone had been taken over by the Council, asked for the final payment of £4o.—Tt was explained that the overseer could not obtain the correct measurement until crushing was completed. A cheque of £3.5 was'passed, and the balance will be paid on the overseer's -certificate when crushing is completed.

It was unanimously decided that a share of the Council's printing and advertising (other than statutory advertising) be placed with the Taranaki Daily Xew«. which had established a permanent branch printing ollwe -in Stratford.

Cr. Healy moved, according to notice, to rescind a resolution passed a couple of years ago to permit the Public Works Department to remove spoil from a reserve, section ~~u. on the south side of the river.—Seconded by Cr. King, and carried.

The Town Clerk was authorised to take steps to raise the loan. In answer to Cr. King, the Mayor said that the Council fould borrow at 5 per cent., with half per cent, additional for sinking fund. The rate of interest was fixed at not more than 5 per cent. Answering Cr. Healy, the Mayor said that the cost of exchange, etc'had to be added to the actual cost of the money. If the money were raised in Australia, there would be exchange to pay. STRAY PARAGRAPHS A week or two ago a curious correspondent of the News asked if it were true that dogs seized by the Borou<rh Council's ranger were "hanged bv the neck" at the landing stage of the Town Hall until they were dead. The idea was scouted in some quarters at the time, but the correspondent was apparently on safe ground, for at Monday night's meeting of the Borough Council the Mayor stated that he had made enquiries, and found that this was the practice. He' had given instructions that it should' cease. Tn future stray dogs are to be offered by auction. Failing buyers, the dogs will be given a little'prussic acid., which will send them to the happy hunt-! ing grounds in very short order. \

Chatting with Mr. Campbell Jackson one of our most prominent riflemen, a News reporter gathered that the recent rifle meeting at New Plymouth was the most successful yet held, and he believed it would soon he one of the best in the North Island. The local men thoroughly enjoyed themselves. As for the little trouble about marking. Mr. Jackson said that could be simply overcome, and he was satisfied that the executive would be found equal to the occasion.

The Mayor and Crs. Boon. Healy and King have been set up to inquire into the whole matter of the pressure in the town water mains and extraordinary supplies, with instructions to report to tl ■• Borough Council. At the time of the day when gardens are being watered by the hose, the pressure is verv low —so low that the Fire Brigade members cannot put in decent practice. In the event of a fire, what?

A big meejinir of shareholders of the Stratford Farmers' Co-operative Association yesterday decided to continue buttcr-makimr in the coming season. They also "turned down" the proposal to manufacture casein.

Motorist* sometimes leave their cars standing almost in the middle of the side-streets. Cr. Dingle mentioned on Monday svenig at the Council table that this constituted a source of annoyance to drivers of vehicles, and he hoped motorists would take the hint and draw their cars into the roadside.
