RIFLE SHOOTING.
* ji TARAXAK! RIFLE ASSOCIATION. : SOMB I'INK rBKK)I!MASC-KS. ] Taranaki riflemen held their ninth an- i Hiho v«.stcr.l:»v. an.l judging by th ■ (ex-champion of N«v Zc»l«ml) fI ; J.V Winslade and A. H. Ouy all of whom lave represented New Zealand afield. AI oato again is the number of rifle lub •enresentatives no fewer than o7 fioin n»amomoiia, Kaponga, Pohokura late, kltham. Tariki. Tarata «n« enmpctnig. There are eleven Jenito ah> from the B Company lind one from Eltham, whilst three of the staff officers are competing. The shooting on the whole, was good, though the light arid wind, principally the former, baffled many of the old shots as well as the vounger ones. When one reads that first-class shots after making five consecutive bulls eyes wound up with two threes, and two's were occasionally sandwiched between bull's eyes, one can tell that something was wrong. In the. morning the light was dull, due to the imokv clouds. 'ln the afternoon, when the sun came out. there was a glare with occasionally a mirage, and, of course, the -hooting of those who were down on the. latter occasions suffered. The wind wa> not such a great offender, bein" variable and light. During the day °shontin<' was vigorously proceeded with, and tluee matches, as well as two ranges of the teams matches, were got off" Seventeen possibles were notched, viz, one at 300 yds, ten at 500 yds. and six'at OOOvds. Whangamomona were seen out on the range for the first time, ■■and notched- prize money. Tarata have not visited here for several years, but two of that famous club are competi-] tors, and one Private Drummond signal-, ised his reappearance, by winning two! matches, with one off the possible in the Tnglewood Match (7 shots at 300, anil 000 yds). ami scoring 00 in the 300, ! 50ft, and OOOvds ranges of the New Plymouth Match. Sergeant W. Diehl, of I __ ~ . 'j.l. _ T" A «»~ ATnlnll
New Plymouth, won the Kaponga Match with one off the possible. Pres. Drumanond, of Tarata, is at present loading on the aggregate with 229 points, but Riflemen Hollard (Kaponga). Roots (Patea). and Winslade (New Plymouth) are each only a point in the rear. In the two ranges of the Teams Match. Kaponga is leading from Patea by three points. The arrangements at the range were perfect, and were much appreciated. Lieut.-Colonel Okey was in charge of the whole arrangements, and had with him ns range officers Captain Lampen and Lieuts. Messenger and Humphreys (Tnglewood). Col.-Sergcant Armitage had charge of a squad of twelve markersone to each target—who did their work well, though occasionally there was to he heard a disgrunted competitor who thought his shot was a bulleye, when the marker signalled an outer or a miss. There were only 21 challenges during the day, and the majority of these were not sustained. The catering was in the hands of the Association itself. Sergt. Southam and his brother were the general dispensers of solid and liquid rerreshments, and were kept busy. In the rush of the dav they were assisted by Mosdames W. Bruce and Winslade, and Miss Winslade. Several ladies were also interested spectators at the range during the afternoon. The results are as follows: KAPONGA MATCH; 7 shots at each of the 300 and 500 yards ranges. Thirty prizes, 10 of which are for tyros. 300 500—Tl. Sergt. W. Diehl (B Coy.. N.P.), £2 2s 35 34—69 Pres.
