THE RAILWAYS.
A RUMOR EMPHATICALLY DENIED. Cliristeliiircli, January 29. A message from Wellington received 10-day states that it is freely rumored in railway circles that it is the intention of the Government to appoint a general manager of railways from applicants from abroad, and if successful at the next general elections they will pass an Act making him (the commissioner) outside political control. The Ministerial contention, it is stated, is that by this means they will rid themselves of a huge amount of trouble and responsibility, at the same time giving the new manager an opportunity of effecting a saving, which, if carried out by the Minister, would result in endless deputations, and possibly political trouble.
The statement was referred to the Hon. F. M. is. Fisher by a reporter this afternoon. The Minister denied absolutely that there was in any truth in any of the statements, and he remarked that the originator of the rumors seemed to know more about the matter than the Government. Mr. Fisher pointed out that the applications for the position had not yet been received hv the (government, far less considered.
