Sicdcberg. who returned to Dunedin recently from a tour of the Old Country, made special endeavor during her short stay in London to discover what methods tlie Government and organised social bodies adopted to help deserted wives, the children of drunken pa-'-nls, and generally the unfortunates who are lighting a losing battle in life. She found that the Government appeared to take little interest in the poorer people, most of the social work being undertaken by private people and semi-private societies. In July she attended, as the New Zealand delegate, the conference of the Eugenics Education Society at which many of ihe most eminent in the world -"re present. Eugr-iies, she says, is treat> ■ ' in the Old World purely as a scientific abject and engages the interested attrition of the most eminent men.
