STRATFORD NEWS.

I (From Our Resident Reporter). OVERSEAS CLUB About a year ago it was proposed to form a Stratford branch of the Overseas Club. As set out in an article in this page at that time, the object of the Club is to foster the Imperial spirit, and to cement closer the ties between the colonies and the Motherland. On Tuesday next, the Rev. \V. A. Rutler is calling "a meeting to form a branch of the Cub, and all sons of Britain are invited to attend. PERSONAL Dr. and Mr*. Paget returnee! to Stratford on Tuesday evening. Word was received in Stratford yesterday that Mr. "Will." Diamond, man- | ager of Bernard's Pictures, who is undergoing treatment at the hands of Dr. Lowe, fn Auckland, would have to undergo a surgical operation. This will probably be performed to-day. Patrons of His Majesty's will wish him a speedy recovery. Mrs. E. Jackson, also ill m Auckland, is making a good recovery from a sharp attack of pneumonia. Mr. Jackson will remain in Auckland until Mrs. Jackson can return with him to Stratford. It was Mr. M. I. Jury, not Mr. Murray who has sold out in the Pohokura district. In days long gone hy "Maurice" was a leading light in all matters athletic in Stratford? and particularly prominent in the Caledonian Society's affairs. He is leaving for Onga Onga, near Waipawa, shortly. ' STRAY PARAGRAPHS With a view of discouraging the secularisation of Good Friday, the Church of England Men's Society has decided to organise an out-door service at Stratford on that dav. At a meeting of the local branch on Tuesday evening it was decided to invite the co-operation and presence of all friendly and kindred societies in the district and to request the attendance also of the Mayor and RorOU«h Councillors. County Councillors. and so on. A procession, headed by the Stratford Municipal Brass Band, will probably form part of the demonstration. The service will be held in one of the Stratford parks, or in the event of bad weather, probably in the Town Hall. The address will be given by the Rev. W. A. Butler, M.A., vicar of TToly f Trinity Church. The sisters of Lady Islington Foresters Lodge entertained a number of friends at a social evening in the Foreste'- - Hall on Tuesday, when a "cold snap' - made dancing pleasant. About tuirty couples were present, and Mr. R. Gredig wasM.C, Miss Copestake supplying the music, with extras played by Miss Birkett and Messrs. Marett and Mumby. 'Mrs. Brooking catered in her usual excellent stvle. It is related that a well-known Stratford anglpr. one who by the way is a noted fly* fisherman, has had great successes recently in the Mangawhero stream with a new' species of "fly."—to wit. the creeper grub. It is also stated that this fly will he on sale at the sporting goods dealers in time for next season. Tt is ,to be known as the "Burpr Repeerc." which suggests backward fishing. Stratford makes its annual descent on New Plymouth to-day. About twelve hundred'voung. old, little and big Stratfordites will take charge of the Enst End beach. And the Stratford and St, Andrew's Tennis Clubs have engagements with New Plymouth and Fitzroy respectively. The provincial bowling tournament has cancelled the annual picnic bowling match. Stratford v. New Plymouth. BTRNARD'S PICTURES TO-NIGHT. For a genuinely attractive motion pie- ( ture programme'the new selection to be : screcvd to-night would be hard to excel. , Travel pictures of "Scutari," that war- \ infested centre, are to be unreeled; also ■ "The International Boat Race." and a sweetly pretty flower study. "Poppies." , Popular dramatic tastes are catered forwith an intensely interesting picture. "Robin Hood Outlawed," being the life of Robert. Earl of Huntingdon and bin ' merry men. Not alone is this picture in ; the "feature" section as the Kalemprodueers are represented with a thrilling photo-play. "The Prisoner of the Harem." < showimr the abduction of a young Am or- ' ican girl, and the stirring adventures of a voung man-of-warsman who succeeds in her rescue. Edison w all prominent ; •with "A Dangerous Lesson." an honest heart to heart sort of stevry of young , married life, which will strike a respon- ; sive chord in more than one breast.
