EXCITEMENT IX BELFAST. POLICE PREVENT TROUBLE. By Cable —Press Association—Copyright. London. January 17. There was much excitement in Belfast, and fusillades of revolver shots took place in the principal streets. A man was sccidentally shot and taken to the hospital. The police restrained the rival crowds with difficulty. The Police Commissioner, who was directing operations, was severely kicked and beaten. The crowds slowly dispersed. There was little excitement in the Nationalist quarter. i THE RIVAL FACTIONS. MILITARY IN READINESS. v Received 19, 5.5 p.m. London, January 18. It is reported that the Nationalists will bury the Union Jack at Falle road, and that the Belfast Unionists will burn Mr. Asquith in effigy at Helens Bay. The Duke of Devonshire will move the rejection of the Home Rule Bill in the House of Lords. There have been many bon fires in the Nationalist quarter at Belfast. The police prevented collisions between bands of Unionists and Nationalists. The military are in readiness in their barracks. The Unionists held a mock wake round an uncoffined effigv. labelled ''Home Rule."
