A CLOSE CONTEST. By Cable—Press Association —Copyright. Paris, January 10. The third ballot of the groups of the Republican Left in the two Chambers to choose a candidate for the Presidency, gave M. Pams. Minister for Agriculture 32.! votes, this being one below the required majority. M. Poincnre got 309 votes, and several others smaller votes. M. Descfianel and M. Dubost previously retired from the contest. THE CONTEST FOR THE PRESIDENCY. Received IS. 12.20 a.m. Paris, January 17. M. Poineare's determination to contest the Precidency in defiance of his party's wish, led to a stormy meeting of the party. The speakers characterised M. Poincare as ail adventurer who had strangled party discipline.
