LYSOL AND SUICIDE.
REMARK UY AUCKLAND CORONER. Auckland, November 26. "If people only knew the awful suffering whic h attaches'to the taking of lysol they would never take it for the purpose of committing suicide." Such was a casual remark made by the city coroner (Mr. Tho-i. (Jresham) at the close of yesterday's proceedings at the Coroner's Court.
The subject of reference was the number of eases in which lysol had been used of late, either in regard to suicides or attempted suicides. The previous day a middle-aged man' had been .taken to tlie hospital sullerhig from lysol poisoning, and yesterday a woman, aged about 50, was charged with having attempted to commit suicide by taking the same fiery lotion. Still another lysol tragedy occurred in the early hours of this morning at Grey Lynn. Sub-Inspector Hendry remarked, when seen by a Star representative, that one of the suicidal waves which, like many other phenomena, came in cycles, had been passing over Auckland, and strangely enough lysol cases had occurred. He confirmed the remarks of the coroner with.regard to the agony attaching to the. use of this form of poison, and thought that people of suicidal tendencies should realise the suffering involved in that method of bringing about their quietus. It is sincerely to be hoped that the present wave has expended itself.
